Sulfur Studio's Drive Thru Art Box
In early 2023 I was invited by Arts Southeast to propose a project for their unique exhibition space in a Drive Thru Menu Box. The disused remnant from a former tenant in the parking lot of a favorite local pub has been a cornerstone of Arts Southeast's programing for several years. In making preparatory gouache sketches to propose a work for the Drive Thru Art Box I realized that the process of making drawings for possible installations was engaging in itself. To that end, 100 Proposals for the Drive Thru Art Box turns the process into the work, presenting a rotating installation, a private performance (the weekly trip across town to install in the box) and a work of endurance art (the work of making daily drawings).
Over the course of 17 weeks, I installed 6 drawings per week rotated through the Drive Thru Art Box display beginning Thursday, March 9. Installations were be generated as the exhibition progressed, leaving the process open to influence and change on the fly. Topics included: local or national or cultural news, the near limitless possibilities of the project itself, a history of past installations in the box, references to the location, Green Truck Pub, hamburgers, my own work, post apocalyptic futures, jokes, flights of fancy…
The final set of drawings was installed June 29. The project concluded July 8th. Drawings were documented via weekly instagram posts @mrhopthescissor and updated here.
